Three people have now died from West Nile virus in the Netherlands. Dutch National Institute for Public Health confirms rising infections and fatalities this year.
Nine new cases appeared since last week, authorities report from the Hague today.
Infections stemmed entirely from local transmission within various Dutch provinces, officials stated. Major provinces affected include Utrecht, North Brabant, North Holland, South Holland, Overijssel, Gelderland.
Culex mosquitoes primarily spread the virus; no vaccine is currently available yet. Most cases show no symptoms, but some patients experience fever, weakness, and aches.
