France reports first human Shamonda virus infection in a Lyon hospital patient. The health ministry announced the infection earlier this month, confirming the case.
Officials say the virus had never previously been known to infect people.
Authorities stress that no public health risk exists based on current knowledge. Investigators suspect a Culicoides midge bite may have caused this fatal infection.
Shamonda virus was previously detected in livestock across eastern France this summer. Europe first reported Shamonda cases this year, which mainly affect cattle globally.
