Chinese car brands surpass Japanese rivals in European sales for first time. Research firm Dataforce revealed these figures in newly published data on Monday.

BYD, Jaecoo, Xpeng, and Zeekr captured twelve point seven percent of sales.

Japanese brands Toyota and Nissan followed with eleven point nine percent share. Five years ago, Chinese manufacturers held barely one percent of the market.

The European Union argues state subsidies give Chinese producers an unfair advantage. Meanwhile, European automakers struggle in China, where local brands win more buyers.
