Belgium’s federal government debt rose significantly during the month of May. Debt increase reached nearly thirteen billion euros, according to official agency figures.

Federal debt at month’s end exceeded five hundred seventy-eight billion euros value.

Net increase, excluding investments, was almost four billion euros after adjustments. Debt portfolio’s average maturity decreased, now just above ten years total.

Average interest on government borrowing instruments reached over two percent this period. Experts warn rising debt may threaten long-term financial stability and credit ratings.
