The Dutch government is considering a new sugar tax on food products. Researchers at the national public health institute examined two different tax variants.
The first variant targets products holding six grams of sugar per hundred.
The second variant applies to items with twenty grams or more sugar. Cookies, cakes, candies, chocolate, and sweet spreads would face the heaviest impact.
Under the lower variant, forty two percent of sugar would be taxed. Officials hope the tax will reduce sugary purchases, though trends remain unclear.
